Victorian Hats
In my Victorian hat designs, I strive to incorporate the elegance style and depiction of the Victorian Era.
The term "Victorian" gets its name from Queen Victoria, who ruled England from 1837-1901. Before this time, men were the focus of fashion, but with a queen in power, women's fashion became more popular. The woman's fashion became an indication of her husband's status and wealth to the community.
According to Victoriana Magazine: One of the most debated accessories used in women's fashion Victorian hats was the use of birds and bird feathers as a fashion ornament. According to Harper's Bazaar, during the last quarter of the 19th century feather decoration for hats, fans, and boas was at its peak. Victorian hats were decorated with wings, breasts and whole birds. In 1875, the merle, or blackbird, was a favorite − a Brazilian blackbird which was not black but had blue and bronze shades on its wings and back. Also, long clustered plumes, and in bandeaux that passed around the crown and hung on each side behind. Arrangements of ostrich feathers projected outward from the hat and upward on the crown, left to curl without being tacked in the middle.
